Buying guide
Choosing a cooling product comes down to three questions: how much cooling do you actually need, which technology suits your climate and room, and what will installation involve? This guide covers all three.
Portable AC vs. air cooler vs. fan
Portable air conditioners use a compressor and refrigerant to actively lower room temperature and remove humidity; they need a window or vent opening for the exhaust hose. Evaporative air coolers pass air over water-soaked pads — effective in dry climates, but they add humidity and cannot match compressor cooling in humid weather. Fans move air and make you feel cooler through evaporation from your skin, but they do not lower room temperature. If you need a guaranteed temperature drop in a humid climate, only a compressor-based AC will do the job.
Understanding BTU: ASHRAE vs. DOE/SACC
You will see two BTU numbers on portable ACs. The older ASHRAE rating measures raw cooling under lab conditions. The newer DOE/SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity) rating accounts for real-world factors like heat re-entering through the exhaust hose — it is typically 40–50% lower and is the number to use when sizing a room. Choosing capacity — and why bigger isn't always better
An oversized AC cools the air quickly but shuts off before removing humidity, leaving the room cold and clammy, and cycling wastes energy. An undersized unit runs constantly without reaching temperature. Start from the manufacturer's recommended room size, then adjust for:
- Ceiling height: ratings assume ~8 ft ceilings; add capacity for higher ceilings.
- Sun exposure: very sunny rooms need roughly 10% more; shaded rooms about 10% less.
- Insulation: garages and older buildings lose cooled air quickly.
- Occupancy: add capacity for rooms regularly holding more than two people.
- Appliances: kitchens and equipment-heavy rooms carry extra heat load.

Humidity and climate
In humid climates, look for portable ACs with good dehumidification and check the drainage method. In hot, dry climates (much of the Southwest), evaporative coolers deliver efficient comfort at a fraction of the energy use — but they need airflow, so crack a window rather than sealing the room.
Exhaust hoses: single vs. dual
Single-hose units exhaust indoor air outside, which pulls warm air in through gaps — simple and compact, fine for small and medium rooms. Dual-hose designs draw outside air for the condenser, cooling larger spaces more efficiently. Whichever you choose, keep the hose short and straight and seal the window kit well.
Drainage
Most modern portable ACs self-evaporate condensate through the exhaust in normal cooling mode. In very humid weather or dehumidifier mode you may need to empty a tank or connect a gravity drain hose. Check the drainage method listed on each product page.
Noise
Compressor units typically run 45–58 dB — comparable to moderate conversation. For bedrooms, compare the minimum (low-fan/sleep-mode) figure rather than the maximum, and look for a sleep mode. Tower and desk fans are quieter; check listed ranges.
Window compatibility
Window kits fit within a stated size range for sliding and hung windows. Measure your opening before buying and compare with the window-kit range on the product page. Casement (crank-out) windows usually need a separate adapter solution.
Energy use
Check the wattage on the product page. Fans use the least energy by far, evaporative coolers a little more, and compressor ACs the most. A correctly sized AC on a timer or schedule costs meaningfully less to run than an oversized one.
