A portable air conditioner uses a compressor and refrigerant to actively lower room temperature, venting warm air outside through an exhaust hose. An evaporative air cooler uses water evaporation to create a cooler-feeling airflow and works best in dry climates. A fan moves air but does not lower room temperature.

Yes — compressor-based portable ACs must vent warm air outdoors, usually through a window with the included window kit and exhaust hose. Check the window-kit size range on each product page to confirm fit with your window.

ASHRAE is the older lab-condition rating; SACC (DOE) is the newer standard that reflects real-world performance and is typically 40–50% lower. Use SACC when sizing a room. We show both on product pages.

Most modern units self-evaporate condensate in normal cooling mode. In very humid weather or dehumidifier mode you may need to empty the tank or connect a drain hose. The drainage method is listed in each product's specifications.
